Heat pumps behave differently than gas furnaces, especially on cooler mornings. If your heat pump is running but the air feels “cool,” or the system isn’t keeping up, this FAQ explains what’s normal and when it’s time for service.
Do you offer same-day heat pump repair?
When scheduling allows, yes. Call/text (760) 227-2828 or Book your own appointment online, and we’ll confirm the soonest available time. If you’re without heat, we’ll prioritize an accurate diagnosis and a clear path to restore comfort.
My heat pump is running but the air feels cool — is that normal?
Sometimes. Heat pumps often deliver air that feels cooler than a gas furnace, even while the home is warming. If the house temperature is rising and holding steady, it may be normal operation. If the home won’t reach set temperature, it’s time to have it checked.
What is defrost mode and should I be worried?
Defrost mode is normal. In certain conditions, the outdoor unit can frost over and the system temporarily shifts to clear the coil. During defrost, you may notice changes in airflow temperature or the outdoor unit behaving differently. If defrost happens constantly or you see heavy ice buildup, that’s not normal.
Why is my outdoor heat pump unit icing up?
Light frost can be normal. Thick ice that builds and doesn’t clear usually indicates a defrost control problem, a sensor issue, low airflow, or refrigerant/performance concerns. If you see heavy ice, avoid repeatedly turning the system on and off and schedule service.
My heat pump runs all day — does that mean it’s broken?
Not necessarily. Heat pumps commonly run longer cycles than furnaces to maintain steady comfort. It becomes a problem when it runs constantly and still can’t maintain temperature, or if your energy usage jumps suddenly. We’ll check airflow, thermostat setup, refrigerant performance, and outdoor coil condition.
What is “aux heat” or “emergency heat”?
Aux heat is backup heating that supports the heat pump during colder conditions or when the heat pump can’t keep up. Emergency heat is a mode that typically disables the heat pump and uses backup heat only. If aux heat is running frequently, it can raise energy costs and usually means the system needs adjustment or repair.
Why does my heat pump blow warm air sometimes and cooler air other times?
This can happen due to defrost cycles, outdoor temperature changes, or thermostat staging. It can also be caused by airflow issues, incorrect thermostat configuration, or system performance problems. A diagnostic confirms whether it’s normal staging or a mechanical issue.
What should I check before calling for heat pump repair?
Confirm the thermostat is set to HEAT (not COOL) and the temperature is set above room temperature. Replace the air filter if it’s dirty and make sure vents aren’t blocked. If it still won’t maintain temperature, schedule service so we can verify airflow, control settings, and heating performance.
Do you recommend heat pump repair first or heat pump replacement first?
Repair-first. We diagnose, explain what failed, and provide clear options. If replacement truly makes more sense due to reliability, overall condition, or long-term cost, we’ll show you why and let you decide—no pressure.
Do you service all heat pump brands?
Yes — we service all major brands and common heat pump configurations. We’ll identify the root cause and recommend the most practical path forward.
Are you licensed and insured?
100% Yes. Lic# 1066880. bonded and insured.
